Father's Day Poem

There must be some misunderstanding

There must be some kind of mistake

I waited in the rain for hours

You were late

-Genesis

The key is where we left it,

the boat is,

the radio playing this song.

We walked down to the lake

It felt the same, like you were still there

with us.

Remember when we laid down

in the middle of the road

looking up at the stars

perfectly silent?

Even your app that showed the constellations

seemed magical.

All we had to do was go back to the cabin

sit by the fire

listen to the radio

have our mini shots of blackberry

and tell the story again

about the the owl

that landed so close to us

it was part of our circle

we all saw it

and then it flew away.

Bio: Jamie Buehner

I’m Jamie Lynn Buehner, and I feel outside of almost everything except, hopefully, my own life. I’m a middle school teacher, and I feel like this mentality helps me excel at my job. I live beside the Russian River in Sonoma County, CA, with my two children and three pets.

I have been journaling consistently since elementary school, but my love of writing for publication began in 2008 at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. The creative writing MFA community was so supportive and nurturing, I cherish my time there to this day.

One thing I learned was that not only could one timestamp oneself in writing, one could also tweak one’s perspective, even after the fact. Writing for me is a way of cleaning up, understanding, and tying a bow on my own story, which is, in the end, all I will leave behind.
